The Value of Social Media in Public Engagement

by Roy Wells on July 2, 2010

One state legislator who embraces the transparency of social media is Senator Daylin Leach (D-17), representing portions of Montgomery and Delaware counties, just outside Philadelphia, PA. First elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 2002, he was elected to the Pennsylvania state Senate in 2008, where he serves as the Minority Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He also serves as a member on the Aging and Youth, Communications and Technology, Local Government, Policy, and Public Health and Welfare committees.

I have been following Senator Leach since he established his social media presence and have been impressed with the transparent way in which he engages any and all who enter into a conversation with him. Known as someone who speaks his mind, the Senator was willing to sit down with me for an interview while waiting to be called back into session to finish the 2010-11 state budget. As you will see in the video, the senator’s personality on social media is the same as it is in person. Because the interview ran slightly over 10 ten minutes, I have divided the video into two parts. The first part is a general conversation about why and how he uses social networking platforms.

Part two is a conversation about Senator Leach’s use of social media to educate the public on drilling in the Marcellus Shale, and what he believes is his responsibility to not only his constituents but to the citizens of Pennsylvania.

Senator Leach has a personal facebook page with 1,544 friends, and a fan page that is liked by 782 people. He currently has 826 followers on Twitter, and you can find his blog at www.daylinsights.com. If you are interested in following the interns you can find them here.
