How I Got Here
Taking a lyric from the Grateful Dead – “What a long, strange trip its been.”
I started college as a meteorology major (1 week); then decided to be a math major (1 week); and then decided to take a year off. After managing a Kentucky Fried Chicken for a year there was no turning back from deciding that college was the better avenue for me. I studied politics and economics and given the tensions in US/Soviet relations, and the threat of nuclear armageddon (if you remember the early ’80s) decided to pursue a Ph.D. in Soviet studies at Penn State. Fortunately I received my Masters before the Cold War ended and my dreams of combating the “Red Menace” crumbled like the Berlin Wall. Along the way I developed my quantitative skills and started programing databases and building PC’s. I took a job working for the Pennsylvania Legislature running a program that I was involved in developing, and then started writing database programs and building mapping programs for the State Senate. I was fortunate to land an opportunity as budget analyst with the State House of Representatives and ended my government career as a Deputy State Treasurer for Administration.
I became a partner in a government relations and strategic communications firm when I exited government and have been President and CEO of that company since 2002. Along the way I have been a business consultant, bank board member, president of a business club, served on a number of boards and commissions, and have always provided advice and consultation on a broad range of issues for those who asked. I am married to a yoga instructor, who keeps me centered, have two grown children, and am an avid tennis player.
